Hyundai Ioniq No Sound: Fixed

4 min read

Hyundai Ioniq No Sound

No sound output in the Hyundai Ioniq can be caused by various factors, ranging from a blown fuse to system glitches and clogged speaker terminals. The most popular solution for this, which works most of the time, is to pull out and re-insert the amplifier fuse, located in the fuse box under and to the right of the steering wheel, using the fuse removing tool in the fuse box under the bonnet.

So you turned on your Hyundai Ioniq PHEV and got no sound from the speakers—no music from the radio, no CarPlay, and even the voice commands didn’t work? It’s the weirdest thing. And it means you have a sound output issue.

However, this solution will not be needed if you can easily diagnose what is causing the no-sound issue first and then resolve it.

So before you get all technical, consider doing the no-brainer solutions first, such as:

  • Check if you hit the MUTE button on the steering wheel.  (You’d be surprised by how often this bad guy is the culprit of this issue.)
  • Please turn off the car, step away for a while, and return to turn it on again.
  • Reset the radio by putting a pin in the hole next to the volume control.

I’ve been fixing mechanical issues in PHEVs for a long time and have encountered enough problems on my 2019 Ioniq Premium SE to tell you how you can solve the no-sound problem in your EV.

In the rest of this guide, you will learn in more detail the common causes of no sound in Ioniq EVs and the different ways you can fix them that work in many situations.

Hyundai Ioniq No Sound Causes

Most of the time, there can be a glitch in the overall sound system of your Hyundai Ioniq vehicle, like the Windows operating system.

This is because the media system is always powered to preserve memory settings, even when the ignition is off. So you have to completely turn it off to solve whatever issues the glitch is causing.

And powering off means you have to remove and reinstall the fuse.

The lack of sound output is a general problem for most electric vehicles. So it’s not uncommon for owners to complain about their sound system not working, preventing them from fully utilizing the sound and infotainment systems.

When you get into this situation, the following tips will help you diagnose and fix the root cause without needing to call a professional technician.

5 Fixes for Hyundai Ioniq No Sound

I have cited that removing and reinserting the fuse is the common way to fix the no-sound issue for Ioniqs. However, before you do that, you should consider the following tips, as they may be the root cause of the problem:

1. Reverse the Audio Fuse In The Fuse Box

There is a simple solution if you are experiencing a lack of sound in your Hyundai Ioniq. This fix worked for me, and I am sure it will work for you.

First, locate the fuse box under the hood of the vehicle. To remove fuses, you will need a fuse removal tool. Once you have the fuse tool, find the correct fuse for the sound system in your vehicle’s manual.

Remove the fuse, flip it around, and then put it back in its spot. This should solve the issue and restore sound to your vehicle.

If this fails, you may also try the reset button. However, reversing the fuse has helped at least lots of Ioniq owners with the same problem.

This fix should take approximately 5 minutes to complete. If the issue persists, you should consult a professional mechanic or bring your vehicle to the dealership.

2. Check for dirt buildup in the speakers.

Dirt buildup may prevent your speakers from working properly. So you could have all the wires connected correctly, even if you didn’t press the mute button.

But once the speakers’ terminals are obstructed, you may not get sound output.

So first, consider using a wire brush or other cleaning tools on them to remove any possible dirt buildup.

It is good to keep your car clean, but this will not always solve the no-sound issue. If that’s the case, then consider the next solution.

3. Check for faulty speakers.

You won’t be able to get sound from the radio in your Ioniq when there are defective parts or broken wires in your speakers.

Try connecting your speakers directly to an audio device to be sure they aren’t faulty. Get them replaced if they don’t work.

4. Reset the sound system.

Resetting the sound system is another popular way to solve the no-sound issue in your Hyundai Ioniq. It’s like a one-size-fits-all solution, but you can lose your radio after doing this.

But what matters more is a working sound, right?

Now, try using a ballpoint pen or paper clip to push the small, pinhole-sized reset button on the right side of the power and volume buttons. Press and hold it for a few seconds, and the sound system will reset.

5. Update your EV’s system software.

If none of the above solutions work, this is the final resort for fixing the no-sound problem in your Ioniq Phev. Some problems, including no sound output, are caused by out-of-date software in your car.

Here, we are looking at a software glitch. So updating your system’s software may work like a magic wand.

First, connect your car to a computer using a USB cable connected to its port, then download the latest version of the software onto it.

After updating the software, you restart the car and observe the changes in your sound system.

Different Hyundai Ioniq sound conditions and fixes

Sound condition of the Hyundai IoniqCausesSolution
A single HP does not work.1. Intermittent outages from false contacts while driving1. Check the connectors, such as accessory installations.   2. Check for damaged speakers using a multimeter set to an ohmmeter.
All speakers don’t emit sound.1. Fuse radio   2. Connectors have been configured differently.   3. Sound system on mute1. Check if the fuse radio burnt out   2. Check the power supply of the car radio to the battery.
Speakers work, but the buzz1. Issue with the membrane or suspension   2. Glitch with the amplifier behind the glove box1. Check for a torn membrane and replace the speaker.   2. Disconnect and reconnect the amplifier.

Still no dice?

Suppose you’ve attempted all the solutions in this guide and nothing works; then it is a sign that you need to bring your EV to an expert.

A Hyundai dealer or mechanic can have a professional investigate and repair the problem.

Conclusion

The “no sound from radio” problem is a topical issue among many Ioniq owners. So if you experience such a thing, you don’t need to panic.

I hope that the solutions in this short guide will save you a trip to the dealership.

If the solutions listed above do not work, open your hood, get the fuse tool, remove it, and flip the fuse around.

It is a job you can do in less than 5 minutes instead of waiting two weeks before getting into the dealership (from my experience, at least).

Meanwhile, you can also check if you are still under warranty. If you are, and none of the above fixes worked, then having your speakers replaced for free at your dealership would sound interesting.
